You can blame page 8 for this not being done like 2 days ago. It isn’t that it took me a solid 2 days to figure out what was in those bubbles, but it was much less frustrating to do other things than try to figure out Mayami’s philosophical jibba jabba. Green Ch4 has been translated for like 3 weeks, but both My Bro Frank and I have been too busy ~~doing things that aren’t mind-numbingly boring~~ having fun to start that. It isn’t the nightmare that Y-K is, but the chapters have 3 times as many pages and I try to make those releases look much nicer than I do Y-K. It’s been hot as balls for the past few days, so I’ll probably start that soon. I also keep trying to convince myself to translate the omakes but I honestly don’t want to.

This could have been released Friday night if it was less frustrating to translate Manabu’s Grandfather near the end than it was to play Monster Hunter. It’s out now beause FUCK CAPTURING LAGIACRUS IN THE FLOODED FOREST. So now that I’m all caught up, I’ll probably start working on Green again. I haven’t touched it since February.

Triple Release! It’s been a while!

Yea, let’s just pretend I didn’t say anything about releasing stuff back in March. I was busier than I thought I would have been. School kept me pretty well tied-up, but this time, my GPA actually reflects how hard I worked. I also spent the first week of summer break scoring standardized math tests from all over the nation. Let me tell you, nothing makes me worry about the state of our education system more than getting a stack of 500 tests from some school district in Ohio or Tennessee and seeing that only about 1 in 50 students have scores higher than 15/40 points. And then I spent the next 2 weeks of my summer break playing video games and watching Breaking Bad, which, by the way, is the best show on TV. Or maybe it isn’t; I don’t have a TV so I can only assume that Breaking Bad is the best. Mario Galaxy 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Red Dead Redemption, and Ratchet&Clank Futre: Tools of Destruction are all amazing games that you can completely lose yourself in. Monster Hunter Tri is too, if you can get over the whole grindy aspect of it, as well as the unforgiving learning curve.
Anyway, Manga stuff. There isn’t much to say, really. It took me a while to get back in the translation groove, so 14 and the first half of 15 are pretty rough. I could have released them about a week ago but I started doing the typesetting and just remembered how much I hated doing the typesetting for this series, so I decided to finish 16 before I started on that. And yes, I know 17 has been posted. I have it ripped and My Bro Frank is cleaning it as I type this.
So now that Manga Helpers is dead, I can’t cross-post my stuff there. Since I want people to actually know when I release stuff, I went to Baka-Updates to update the series and saw that someone else has picked up my slack and already done the chapters I’m releasing right now, several months ago. I’m a little surprised that this series has enough of a following that someone else would pick it up, to be honest. I’ll keep doing Y-K because I like doing it. If Vexed wants to keep doing it, he’s welcome to. I always avoided using B-U because I find the data organization, layout, and method of updating to be convoluted and cumbersome, but I guess I have no choice now.
Anyway, with 14 done, that brings volume 3 to a close, I think. That means a whole-volume release. I really ought to just order the Tankubons that are out now to be sure of how the chapters are distributed. If I had a decent scanner, I’d order 2 copies of each and get raws out of the Joker series.
Oh, I didn’t translate the new title page because I didn’t feel like trying to make a coherent English sentence out of it. It’s something to the effect of ‘Yankee x Dere’ (delinquent and lovestruck) a sweet and cute love comedy’. That reminds me, either I’m getting bad at translating stuff or Shinobi is being a real dick and making up titles that make no fucking sense.

Yandere Kanojo Chapter 13!

I told you it would be a while before the next release. This could have been done about 3 weeks ago if it weren’t for the fact that the only computers in my boring-ass morning lecture course with Japanese fonts installed were macs, and there are only 2 of them that function, and because I’m almost always late to that class, I can never get a seat at one that works. When I tried to access the Kanji dictionary I use on the Windows XP machines, it would look like this. Makes it kinda hard to look up about 99% of the kanji I don’t have memorized. But! Spring break arrived and I said to myself “I only have like 5 pages left to translate and 2nd TL pass/typesetting shouldn’t take long, I can do this in an evening.” It took a couple evenings. I’m not happy with the results.
The semester has been much more time-consuming than last semester, though not nearly as hard, which is it took me 8 weeks to do what I could have theoretically done in a weekend, BUT I wouldn’t be surprised to get all A’s and B’s this time around, instead of a C average.
I know that chapter 14 is up on the site (click on the red rectangle), and I plan to have it ripped and mostly translated by the end of spring break, but once upon a time I planned to be done with college by 2006 so it might not go exactly as planned.
I have no idea when I’ll get to work on Green again.

This is probably going to be my last release for a while. The semester started today, so that means that spare time and energy for translating are at a premium again, though I don’t think it will be anywhere near as tough as last semester was. I also have one really boring lecture early in the morning that I might end up using as a time to do translations. Anyway, by doing some research and interpolation, I’ve realized that volume 2 must end at chapter 9, so I’ve uploaded a version of that with proper file names and such. If you’re anal-retentive about that kind of thing, or, you know, just learning about this series and don’t want to download the first 10 chapters individually, you can download it here. I guess that means that volume 3 will end next month with chapter 13. Individual chapters will retain the wrong volume numbers, because fixing that is a headache I don’t feel like giving myself.

Double release! GREEN chapters 2 and 3!

Man, having physical copies of the Manga you’re translating really, really makes things easier. It is so much nicer to flip to page 102 and pull out a magnifying glass than to try and interpolate what character you’re looking at through the JPG artifacts. On that same note, these chapters should look considerably nicer than chapter 1 did. It didn’t occur to me to feed the pages through a .7 gamma, +20 contrast, 20 blur adjustment to make black lines look like black lines. I’ll probably go back and fix chapter 1 when I finish ch4 and release vol1 as a solid file, since it’s something that would probably only take about 20 minutes.
Chapter 4 may get released within the week, it may not. The semester starts on the 25th, and I need to spend a good deal of time brushing up on subject material to prepare myself for the next onslaught of classes.

GREEN chapter 1!

I’ve finished the first chapter of GREEN ~I Wish to be a Farmer’s Wife~. It seems like I finished this in only 3 days, but you need to realize that I had about 75% of it translated before released the last 3 chapters of YKGGO. If you’ve read or watched Nodame Cantabile and enjoyed it for anything other than the music, you’ll probably like this series as well. It’s by the same author, and even from just the one chapter that I’ve translated and the further chapter and a half that I’ve skimmed of it, I can tell that I’m going to enjoy it alot. It’s much more fun to translate than YK is, as the language is more…sophisticated, not to mention the fact that it’s a series with plot progression. It also has nice, big text bubbles, which made typsetting not be a nightmare. It still takes forever, since it’s 40-someodd pages per chapter, and I want it to look NICE, but I no longer need to squish or hyphenate every other word to fit into the tiny little bubbles. The fact that I gave up on hand-writing the handwritten text for this series is also a huge boon. I started doing it when I was doing about 1 YK page about every other day, so spending 20 minutes handwriting stuff and messing around with typesetting per page was no huge deal. But I spent Friday and Saturday doing the typesetting for 3 chapters, and seriously, fuck that noise.
Anyway, I gotta thank you guys for the links. Benippon looks great for ordering YK, since they tend to stock more current, popular items, and I’ve already ordered the 4 volumes of GREEN from Kinokuniya. As soon as either one gets YK volume 2 in stock, I’ll have to do some more ordering.

Back from vacation! Tripple release! Incoming wall of text!

Chapters 9-11 done, and now I’m all caught up, since chapter 12 doesn’t get posted until the 21st. I would have posted them as I finished, but I was visiting My Bro Frank for the past week or so, and since I only brought my netbook with me, I was missing pretty much everything I needed to do proper scanlations. I looked for all the fonts I use, but I couldn’t remember the titles of most of them. “That font alphabetically between ‘Akbar’ and ‘anna’” just doesn’t cut it in a Google search. suppose I could have done it all with Comic Sans, but they would have looked even worse than normal.

I ripped the pages for ch11 myself this time, since nobody had done it yet. It’s understandable, since Square-Enix made it impossible to simply use printscreen to snag the pages, so it required some 3rd-party screen-grabbing programs and some quaity time with The GIMP, which is just so much nicer to use for stitching pages together than Photoshop. Of course, because I was using laggy screen grabbing software, sometimes my cursor would be right in the middle of the page and I wouldn’t notice it. I got MOST of them, but a couple may have slipped through without me noticing. Sorry.
Plugging my netbook into a 1080p monitor that belongs to Frank’s vacationing roommate sure made it easier though, since for each set of pages, I only needed to take a screenshot of the top of the pages and the bottom, instead of like 8 shots on my netbooks monitor. There’s something funny about having a computer the size of 2 DVD cases plugged into a 24″ monitor. I’m gonna have to get me one of these. You may notice that some pages seem washed out. This is because My Bro Frank insists on using Paint Shop Pro for cleaning which seems to mess up color information.

I also did a bit of research, and found that Chapters 0-4 of Y-KGGO have been released in a tankubon, so I guess that constitutes volume 1, which means I get to release a “Volume 1″ file. Volume 2 has been released as well, so I’m guessing it covers 5-11? On S-E’s site, the title page has a volume two cover for chapter 11, so I’m guessing it’s in volume 2. If chapter 12 has a volume 3 title page, then my question will be answered, but I’ll hold off on releasing a “Volume 2” file for now. Truth is, I only know for sure that chapters 5-8 are in vol 2, since the amazon.co.jp sample displays pages from 5, 7 and 8.

Incidentally, If anyone knows good sites to order manga straight from Japan, I’d like to know of them. I know amazon.co.jp offers overseas shipping, but paying ￥2700 shipping plus another ￥300 per item is not something I’d like to do for manga that costs only ￥500 per volume. I’d look for domestic sellers, but Yandere Kanojo isn’t exactly something I expect to be imported very often, but hey, if you know of a site that does, I’d love to be proven wrong.

Anyway, Since I have nothing but spare time for the next couple weeks but no more Yandere Kanojo to translate, and I get restless with nothing to keep me busy, I picked up a new project: Green: I Dream of Being a Farmer, written and drawn by Tomoko Ninomiya, who also wrote and drew Nodame Cantabile and Tensai Family Company. I picked it up pretty much because it’s by the same person who wrote Nodame Cantabile, and it’s been sitting around, unloved and untranslated, for 10 years now. I’ve translated about half of chapter 1 so far, and I already enjoy it more than I enjoyed Yandere Kanojo. It’s targeted at a considerably older audience, so the vocabulary is much more varied, so I don’t have to put as much effort into writing fluid, fresh, accurate dialogue. Also, the text bubbles are WAY bigger than they need to be, as opposed to the Y-K bubbles that were only large enough to accomodate the Japanese dialogue, so I don’t have to go through the typesetting nightmares that Y-K is. Seriously, sometimes I’m tempted to just put all the text in sideways. Sometimes I do. I also won’t miss having to translate a title for every page. I’ll still keep doing Y-K chapters as they come out though.

What’s that, Lassie? Chapter 8 is done!?

This chapter is a double-decker, and by that, I mean that it’s actually 2 short stories squished together. I’d just like to take this time to remind you that GanGan ONLINE is run by Square-Enix. There’s also couple references to something that happened in the GanGan Joker serialization of Yandere Kanojo, and that hasn’t been scanned past chapter 2, so I had to guess at what happened. Frank showed up right before I was going to post this, so luckily I got someone who isn’t me to proofread the chapter this time. Something I’ve learned is that if there was something you MEANT to write down, but you didn’t get it exactly, and then you go back and re-read it, if it’s still somewhat fresh in your mind, you’ll tell yourself that you wrote down exactly what you meant to and ignore the fact that you have missing words and letters out of order.

Merry Christmas guys!
I was still more or less sick while working on the first half of this, but I think I did a pretty good job. There’s a new character in this one, and she spoke with a REALLY thick Kansai accent. It was…not fun to translate as there was more guesswork involved than I would have thought.
Anyway, to reflect that, I made two versions, one where her dialog is all mostly in plain English with a few interesting words here and there, and one where I did my best to make out sound like…well…a hick, or the best I could do.
